Historia

Sany Heavy Industry traces its origins to founder Liang Wengen, who left a state-owned factory in the late 1980s, started in welding materials, and moved the business into construction machinery during the 1990s. The company's website dates Sany Heavy Industry's founding to 1994, while the A-share listing entity was established in 2000 through the overall conversion of Sany Heavy Industry Group Co., Ltd. At the 2003 IPO its main business was the development, production and sale of construction machinery and parts, with profit concentrated in trailer concrete pumps, concrete pump trucks and rollers rather than a full-category platform. In June 2003 it issued 60 million RMB ordinary shares at 15.56 yuan and listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange on 3 July 2003 with 240 million total shares, with Sany Group holding 72.42% at listing. It became one of the first batch of share-structure-reform pilot companies in 2005 and a sample of full share circulation in 2008, and in 2011 it entered the FT global top-500 by market capitalization as the only Chinese construction machinery firm that year. In 2012, together with the CITIC Industrial Fund, Sany acquired 100% of German concrete machinery maker Putzmeister for EUR 360 million, extending its reach from a domestic leader to a global player. By the end of 2020, ratings disclosure recorded Sany as global No. 1 in concrete machinery and piling machinery, No. 1 in domestic excavator sales for ten consecutive years with global No. 1 excavator output, and cumulative patent applications of 10,278 with 7,613 granted. In 2025 the company completed an H-share listing, forming an A+H dual platform, with international main-business revenue reaching RMB 55.86 billion, or 64% of the total. Sany is headquartered in Beijing and had 28,469 employees.

Its differentiation rests on several factual sources: scale and product breadth across five main machine lines; a global channel and service network covering more than 400 overseas subsidiaries, joint ventures and dealers, product sales in over 150 countries and regions, and the MySANY customer-interaction platform live in 129 countries; manufacturing and digital capability, including 37 lighthouse factories in operation with the Beijing piling plant and Changsha No. 18 plant certified as World Economic Forum lighthouse factories; and brand and key-account delivery, reinforced by the Putzmeister acquisition and a dedicated global key-account headquarters. Its 2025 R&D investment was RMB 5.169 billion, 5.79% of revenue, with 5,720 R&D staff equal to 20.09% of employees. Within the sector its most-compared domestic peers are XCMG, Zoomlion and Liugong, with Caterpillar and Komatsu cited as global references; relative to domestic peers, Sany combines a higher overseas revenue share, stronger margins and a more concentrated capital-market narrative.
