Historia

Coupang was incorporated in 2010 and was founded by Bom Kim. It went public on the NYSE on March 11, 2021. From 2021 to 2023 the company invested heavily in capital expenditure to build out its own nationwide fulfillment and delivery network, running accounting losses during this build-out phase. In 2024 scale economics and logistics density crossed an inflection point and the company achieved full-year GAAP profitability. In FY2025 net revenue reached 34.5 billion USD (+14% YoY) with net income of 208 million USD (+35%). Beginning June 24, 2025, a malicious departing employee intruded through an overseas server and remained undetected for 147 days until November 16, exposing the names, phone numbers, emails and delivery addresses of roughly 34 million customers; financial information such as credit cards was not involved. The company committed to about 1.17 billion USD in voucher compensation, which turned Q4 2025 to a net loss attributable to shareholders of 26 million USD, and Q1 2026 recorded an operating loss of 242 million USD and a net loss attributable to shareholders of 266 million USD. The business is organized into two reporting segments, Product Commerce and Developing Offerings, and the company employs about 108,000 people.

Posición en el sector

Coupang is the largest e-commerce retailer in South Korea. Its share of total South Korean retail rose from 6.8% in 2020 to about 15.1% in 2024, and in usage surveys 37.7% of respondents named it their most-used platform, ahead of Naver at 27.2%. Its differentiation rests on a vertically integrated, self-operated logistics model: the Rocket Delivery network covers more than 90% of South Korea, offering dawn delivery (order before midnight, delivered by 7 a.m. the next day), same-day delivery reaching about 70% of residents, and next-day delivery, supported by self-employed delivery staff (Coupang Friends). Rocket WOW paid membership, which bundles delivery, fresh grocery, food delivery and streaming benefits, exceeds 14 million, raising repurchase rates and switching costs. High-frequency transaction and behavioral data feed a higher-margin advertising business. Its main competitors include Naver, which runs a lighter-asset traffic, open-market and NaverPay ecosystem, and Chinese cross-border platforms AliExpress and Temu; globally it is compared with Sea Limited and MercadoLibre, with Coupang having the highest purity of self-operated logistics and the highest single-market focus. The company uses a dual-class share structure: founder Bom Kim holds about 9% economic interest, and because Class B shares carry 29 times the voting power of Class A, he controls about 74.3% of the voting power.
