Historia

Expeditors International of Washington, Inc. was incorporated in 1979 and is headquartered in Bellevue, Washington, and the company completed its IPO on March 26, 1990. It operates as a non-asset-based global logistics services provider, relying on a network of company-owned offices and agents rather than owning aircraft, ships, or trucks, and offers airfreight forwarding and consolidation, ocean freight and ocean services, customs brokerage, ground transportation, warehousing and distribution, order management, and related supply-chain solutions across the Americas, North Asia, South Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and India. By the end of 2025 the company employed roughly 20,000 people, about 13,000 of them in international regions, and generated 2025 revenue of about $11.069 billion, operating income of about $1.053 billion, and net income of about $810 million, with a revenue mix of approximately 36% airfreight, 25% ocean, and 39% customs brokerage and other services. Capital allocation has historically favored organic growth with minimal acquisitions, leaving goodwill of only about $7.9 million at the end of 2025, while sustained buybacks reduced diluted share count from roughly 190 million in 2015 to about 136 million in 2025; a new $3 billion repurchase plan was approved in February 2026. Daniel R. Wall, who joined the company in 1987, became CEO on April 1, 2025.

Posición en el sector

Expeditors operates in the global freight forwarding and logistics services industry, a mature and highly fragmented field with no participant holding a dominant share; even DSV after acquiring Schenker would hold only about 6% to 7% of the global logistics market. In the Armstrong & Associates 2026 ranking, based on 2025 logistics revenue and freight volume, Expeditors placed 6th globally, behind Kuehne + Nagel, DSV, DHL, Sinotrans, and Nippon Express. Its competitive strengths rest on a global direct and agent network, customs and trade-compliance capabilities, organizational culture and execution density, and capital discipline rather than on patents or strong pricing power, and switching is possible for customers though complex clients face friction in moving customs processes, workflows, and systems. The customer base spans technology, cloud and data centers, semiconductors, healthcare, automotive, aerospace, retail, and luxury fashion, with no single customer accounting for more than 5% of revenue; exports from China and Hong Kong represented 19% of 2025 revenue and 15% of operating profit. Expeditors reported 2025 ROIC of about 73.7%, well above C.H. Robinson's roughly 22.8%, while competitors such as Kuehne + Nagel lead in ocean (about 4.3 million TEU in 2025) and DSV leads in scale and acquisition integration; the company also faces well-funded technology-driven new entrants in a sector growing at low-single-digit rates.
