Historia
Lululemon Athletica Inc. was founded in 1998 and is based in Vancouver, Canada, designing, distributing, and retailing technical athletic apparel, footwear, and accessories for women and men under the lululemon brand, with products spanning yoga, running, training, and broader athletic lifestyle wear. The company went public on July 27, 2007. It sells through company-operated stores, seasonal stores, pop-ups, university campus retailers, yoga and fitness studios, outlets, the "Like New" re-commerce program, and its e-commerce website, and operates across the United States, Canada, Mexico, mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macau, Greece, and other international markets. Revenue grew from about $6.26 billion in FY2021 to roughly $11.1 billion in FY2025 (a compound rate of about 15.4%), and by the end of FY2025 the company ran 811 company-operated stores plus 45 third-party licensed stores and employed roughly 39,000 people. A notable setback came from MIRROR / lululemon Studio, on which the company recorded in FY2022 about $362.5 million of goodwill impairment, $40.6 million of intangible-asset impairment, and $62.9 million of hardware inventory write-downs, a combined pre-tax charge of about $470.8 million. The company announced in late 2025 that CEO Calvin McDonald would step down, and in April 2026 appointed former Nike executive Heidi O'Neill as the next CEO, effective September 8, 2026; in May 2026 it reached an agreement with founder Chip Wilson, who still holds about 8.7% of outstanding shares, adding two new board members.
Posición en el sector
Lululemon operates in the Apparel Retail industry as a premium, direct-to-consumer brand built on technical athletic apparel, footwear, and accessories. In FY2025 it generated about $11.1 billion in revenue, of which roughly 71% came from the Americas, 16% from mainland China, and 13% from other international markets, and it sustained an operating margin of 19.9%, higher than most apparel retailers, alongside high gross margins of 57.7%, 55.4%, 58.3%, 59.2%, and 56.6% across FY2021 to FY2025 and an ROIC of about 29.6% (versus about 10.9% for Nike). The company is commonly compared with Nike, Deckers, and On Holding, while its closer rivals for North American premium athletic apparel consumers are the privately held Alo Yoga and Vuori. The industry is highly competitive, with competition centered on brand image, product quality, innovation, style, channel, and price; Lululemon's strengths derive from its brand, product development, direct-store and omnichannel capabilities (including buy-online/pick-up-in-store, ship-from-store, cross-store inventory transfers, and online-offline returns), and community operations, rather than from cost, network effects, or regulation. It does not own manufacturing factories, relying instead on external suppliers: in FY2025 it used about 51 apparel manufacturers (the top five producing 47% of output and the largest 15%), with production concentrated in Vietnam (40%), Cambodia (18%), and Sri Lanka and Indonesia (11% each), plus about 65 fabric suppliers (top five at 48%). In FY2025 Americas revenue fell about 1% year over year with comparable sales down 3%, while international revenue still grew 22% and mainland China revenue grew 28.9%.
