Historique
WuXi Biologics is a global biologics CRDMO platform that grew out of the WuXi AppTec system as a dedicated large-molecule business rather than an independent startup. Its predecessor, Wuxi AppTec Biotechnology Co., Ltd., was established on 25 May 2010 by an entity within the WuXi AppTec system, while WuXi Biologics (Cayman) Inc. was incorporated in 2014 and is headquartered in Wuxi, China. The 2017 prospectus defined it as a global open-access integrated biologics platform built on a "follow the molecule" model, providing one-stop outsourcing from discovery and development through manufacturing; citing Frost & Sullivan, the prospectus stated the company ranked 5th globally and 1st in China by revenue in the biologics outsourcing market in 2016. The company listed on the Main Board of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on 13 June 2017, with a global offering of 192,982,500 shares priced at the top of the HK$18.60-HK$20.60 range at HK$20.60, raising about HK$3.98 billion and leaving roughly 1.134 billion shares outstanding after listing. In February 2021 it completed a fourth placement at HK$112 per share with net proceeds of about RMB 10.899 billion for capacity expansion, and the 2021 Global Partner Plan set a share-price performance hurdle of HK$97.8. Its ADC and bioconjugate business was progressively built into a separate platform, WuXi XDC, which listed separately in November 2023, and the group now operates through two segments, Biologics and XDC. By the 2026-06-10 annual general meeting the company had 4,141,014,517 shares issued. WuXi Biologics operates cGMP drug-substance capacity exceeding 262,000L across China, the United States, Germany and Ireland, with planned expansion to about 588,000L across five countries including Singapore in 2026, and employs 13,252 people. In 2025 revenue reached RMB 21.79 billion, up 16.7% year over year.
Position dans le secteur
WuXi Biologics is one of the leading players in global biologics outsourcing, positioned as a full-process industrialized platform for complex biologics rather than a single-step service provider. According to Frost & Sullivan figures cited in its 2017 prospectus, it ranked 5th globally and 1st in China by revenue in the biologics outsourcing market in 2016. Its core "follow the molecule" model uses front-end research services to win projects that are then carried into high-stickiness back-end manufacturing: Phase III and commercial manufacturing reached 43.4% of 2025 revenue, the company supported 74 Phase III and 25 commercial projects at the end of 2025, updated to 78 late-stage and 25 CMO projects by end-April 2026, with customer retention above 95%. By geography, 2025 revenue was 58.1% from North America, 23.1% from Europe and 12.3% from China; by segment, external revenue was RMB 15.89 billion for the Biologics main platform and RMB 5.90 billion for XDC (ADC and bioconjugates). Customer concentration declined in 2025, with no single customer contributing more than 10% of revenue, the top-five customer share falling from 29.1% to 26.1% and the top-ten from 41.7% to 37.6%. The company's barriers stem from regulatory and process switching costs (once a molecule's cell line, process package, analytical methods, validation and production history are embedded on a platform, changing supplier carries time, re-validation and regulatory costs), platform scale with full-process capability from discovery to commercialization, complex-modality capability in bispecifics, multispecifics and ADCs, and a global dual-source multi-site capacity network spanning China, the United States, Germany and Ireland. New bispecific and multispecific projects grew more than 50% year over year. Grounded peers include Samsung Biologics and Lonza, large global manufacturing platforms treated as sovereign-safe; Pharmaron and Asymchem, used as China CXO valuation references; and WuXi AppTec, the sister small-molecule CRDMO that was added to the U.S. Department of Defense 1260H list on 8 June 2026 and serves as the most direct geopolitical read-through, though WuXi Biologics was not named on that list.
