Historique

Sartorius was founded in 1870 in Göttingen, Germany, when Florenz Sartorius established a precision mechanical workshop focused on scientific instruments and analytical balances. After a late-1980s expansion of its portfolio and modernization of infrastructure, including a new factory site in Göttingen, the company restructured and went public in 1990 to diversify its financing base; the German share page records the listing date as 1990-07-10 at an IPO price of DM 710 for ordinary shares and DM 610 for preference shares. After a difficult 1990s, Sartorius sharpened its focus on life science research and the biopharmaceutical industry, and in 2007 it created Sartorius Stedim Biotech by merging the French company Stedim with Sartorius' Biotech Division. Stedim had begun in 1978 with EVA nutrition bags, pivoted in the early 1990s into single-use solutions for biotechnology, and listed in Paris in 1994. Subsequent acquisitions expanded the offering in software, cell-line development, chromatography, media, and adjacent technologies, including Polyplus (acquired in 2023, deepening exposure to cell and gene therapy tools) and MATTEK; sales grew from EUR 2,335.7 million in 2020 to a pandemic-era peak of EUR 4,174.7 million in 2022, fell 18.7% in 2023, and recovered to about EUR 3,538.1 million in 2025. Joachim Kreuzburg led Sartorius for more than two decades through this transformation, with Michael Grosse becoming CEO on 2025-07-01 and Florian Funck appointed CFO in 2024.

Position dans le secteur

Sartorius is a German life-science tools group whose economic core is bioprocessing, run through its separately listed French subsidiary Sartorius Stedim Biotech, in which Sartorius AG owns about 71.5% of the capital and about 83% of the votes. The group operates two segments: Bioprocess Solutions, which in Q1 2026 produced EUR 735 million of revenue, more than four-fifths of group revenue, at a 31.8% underlying EBITDA margin; and the smaller, more cyclical Lab Products & Services, which produced EUR 164 million at a 20.7% margin. Its strongest competitive advantage is switching cost inside regulated biologics manufacturing, where repeat business with sterile single-use products accounts for about 80% of SSB sales and replacing validated components after approval is costly and cumbersome for customers; the company also wins customers early in R&D and follows molecules into commercial production. Its closest competitors include Danaher (notably through Cytiva), Thermo Fisher, Lonza, Repligen, and Merck KGaA's Life Science arm, against which Sartorius is unusually concentrated on bioprocessing and single-use but lacks the breadth and balance-sheet flexibility of the largest diversified peers. The company's 2026 investor materials place addressable market growth at 7% to 9% for the group, 8% to 10% for Bioprocess Solutions, and 4% to 6% for Lab Products & Services, and the company employs about 14,242 people.
