沿革

Darden Restaurants, Inc. was founded in 1938 and is based in Orlando, Florida, and it went public via an IPO on May 5, 1995. The company owns and operates full-service restaurants in the United States and Canada under brands including Olive Garden, LongHorn Steakhouse, Cheddar's Scratch Kitchen, Chuy's, Yard House, Ruth's Chris Steak House, The Capital Grille, Seasons 52, Eddie V's Prime Seafood, Bahama Breeze and The Capital Burger. It has expanded partly through acquisitions: the Ruth's Chris deal added $353.6 million of goodwill in FY2024, and the Chuy's deal added $268.4 million of goodwill in FY2025. Ricardo Cardenas has served as CEO since 2022, having grown up within the company. By FY2025 the company employed 197,924 people and recorded company restaurant sales of $12.077 billion, while diluted share count fell from 125.4 million in FY2019 to 118.4 million in FY2025. The FY2020 pandemic was an anomaly in which operating profit fell to $47.9 million and the company posted a net loss of $52.4 million, after which it recovered to higher cash-flow levels.

業界での地位

Darden is a multi-brand, full-service restaurant operator in a mature industry, earning revenue primarily through company-owned restaurant sales rather than asset-light licensing fees. In FY2025 its segment sales were Olive Garden $5.213 billion, LongHorn Steakhouse $3.026 billion, Fine Dining $1.305 billion and Other Business $2.534 billion, with total operating profit of $1.362 billion. Its competitive position rests on a composite of brand strength, scale, purchasing, and data capability; in shareholder materials the company itself lists "Significant Scale" and "Extensive Data & Insights" as core competitive advantages, and it cites supply-chain and support-cost synergies as value drivers behind the Chuy's and Ruth's Chris acquisitions. The business model carries no network effects and low switching costs, since customers can readily choose a competitor. Comparable listed competitors include Texas Roadhouse (FY2025 revenue $5.878 billion, operating profit $475 million), Brinker International (FY2025 operating profit $512 million) and Bloomin' Brands (FY2024 continuing-operations operating profit $140 million), against whom Darden differentiates through a broader, more diversified brand portfolio and larger scale.
