沿革
International Flavors & Fragrances Inc. (IFF) was incorporated in 1909 and is headquartered in New York, New York, with its IPO dated December 31, 1981. The company has grown into a diversified ingredients platform that embeds flavor, fragrance, biosciences and food ingredients into customer formulations rather than a single flavors-and-fragrances business. As of 2025 its continuing operations were restructured into four core segments: Taste, Food Ingredients, Health & Biosciences, and Scent. In 2024 J. Erik Fyrwald joined the board and became CEO, and the quarterly dividend was cut from $0.81 to $0.40 as the new team prioritized deleveraging, portfolio reshaping, and a later return of capital. In 2025 IFF completed the divestiture of its Pharma Solutions business, reducing net debt to credit-adjusted EBITDA below 3.0x (2.59x by year-end 2025), and initiated a strategic-alternatives review of its Food Ingredients segment; the board then authorized a $500 million buyback, with about 481,000 shares repurchased for roughly $35 million in the first quarter of 2026. The company carries the legacy of heavy acquisition activity, reflected in successive large goodwill impairments of $2.250 billion (2022), $2.623 billion (2023), $0.064 billion (2024), and $1.153 billion (2025). IFF employs about 21,500 people.
業界での地位
IFF operates in the specialty chemicals space as a multi-segment ingredients platform (Taste, Food Ingredients, Health & Biosciences, Scent) serving food, beverage, home and personal care, fragrance and health customers on a B2B basis. The traditional flavors-and-fragrances market was about €46.8 billion in 2025 with more than 500 active companies, where the top four players—Givaudan, IFF's relevant business, dsm-firmenich and Symrise—together held roughly 52% share, indicating a concentrated but not monopolistic industry. The competitors IFF lists in its annual report include Givaudan, Novonesis, DSM-Firmenich, Symrise, Kerry and ADM. Its customer base spans large global consumer-products companies and smaller customers; as last clearly disclosed in 2023, about 46% of sales came from global consumer-products companies and about 54% from small and medium customers, the top 25 customers accounted for about 32% of sales, and no single customer exceeded 10% of sales. IFF's competitive position rests on long-term customer relationships, application-development capability, regulatory expertise and a global manufacturing and supply network, with switching costs arising from formula reformulation, sensory validation, and stability and regulatory testing. On profitability it ranked behind the strongest peer: Givaudan's 2025 EBITDA margin was about 25.7%, while IFF's 2025 adjusted operating EBITDA of $2.086 billion implied an adjusted EBITDA margin of about 19.2%; 2025 segment sales were about $2.481 billion (Taste), $3.278 billion (Food Ingredients), $2.283 billion (Health & Biosciences) and $2.479 billion (Scent), with Food Ingredients consistently carrying lower margins than the other segments.
