História

American Water Works Company, Inc. traces its history to 1886 and is headquartered in Camden, New Jersey. It went public on April 23, 2008. The company provides water and wastewater services in the United States through its subsidiaries, serving residential, commercial, industrial, fire-service and public-authority customers, as well as offering water and wastewater services on U.S. military installations and operating-and-management contracts for municipal customers. By its 2025 10-K, American Water Works employed roughly 7,000 people and served about 14 million people across 24 states; its core regulated utility network covers 14 states and approximately 3.6 million active customers. The company operates an extensive asset base, including about 80 surface water treatment plants, 520 groundwater treatment plants, 170 wastewater treatment plants, 55,000 miles of transmission, distribution and collection mains and pipes, 1,200 groundwater wells, 1,800 water and wastewater pumping stations, 1,100 treated-water storage facilities and 75 dams. It continues to grow its rate base through infrastructure investment and acquisitions, and is pursuing a stock-for-stock merger with Essential Utilities that had not yet completed.

Posição no setor

American Water Works is the largest and most geographically diversified publicly traded water and wastewater utility in the United States. Its regulated business is the dominant segment, generating 4.723 billion dollars of revenue in 2025, about 92% of total operating revenue, while the smaller "Other" segment mainly serves U.S. military bases and certain municipal customers. The customer base is highly fragmented but geographically concentrated: the top five states accounted for 79.1% of 2025 regulated revenue, with Pennsylvania contributing 24.1% and New Jersey 23.4%. The company's competitive position rests on three utility-style sources of advantage: franchise and regulatory barriers, where local operations depend on franchises, certificates of public convenience and necessity (CPCN) and similar authorizations that are difficult to replicate; scale and financing advantages as the largest publicly traded U.S. water utility, enabling national-platform procurement, engineering and regulatory capability; and switching costs and natural-monopoly characteristics of highly localized, capital-intensive water and wastewater networks that customers do not switch away from. In its established regulated markets the company generally faces no direct competition, but it competes for new acquisition opportunities against peers such as Essential Utilities, American States Water and California Water Service, as well as infrastructure funds.
