História

Evergy, Inc. was incorporated in 2017 and is headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri, conducting its initial public offering on June 4, 2018. It operates as an integrated, regulated electric utility in Kansas and Missouri through its operating subsidiaries, covering generation, transmission, distribution, and the sale of electricity, and is managed as a single reportable segment across four service areas in the two states. The company generates power from a mixed fleet of coal, landfill gas, uranium (nuclear), natural gas and oil, as well as solar, wind, and other renewable sources, and serves residential, commercial, industrial, municipal, and other electric-utility customers. By the company's most recent 10-Q, Evergy and its subsidiaries together serve approximately 1.7 million customers and hold roughly 15,800MW of owned generation capacity plus renewable power purchase agreement capacity. In the first quarter of 2026, operating revenue was $1.444 billion, of which retail electricity revenue was $1.095 billion (about three-quarters of the total), split among residential ($483 million), commercial ($440 million), industrial ($160 million), and other retail ($11 million), with the remainder from wholesale, transmission, and other revenue; the company employs approximately 4,691 people. David Campbell has served as CEO since 2021 and additionally as chairman since 2024.

Posição no setor

Evergy holds a natural local-monopoly position within its traditional service territories. Kansas law requires the state to be divided into exclusive electric service areas, with only one retail electricity supplier in each area, while Missouri permits the exclusion of retail electric competition through territorial agreements; as a result, direct retail competition for Evergy's customers is very weak, and competition occurs more in regulatory hearings, capital markets, and in attracting large customers. The company operates within the SPP regional power system. Its pricing power is exercised within a regulatory framework: in 2026 the Kansas KCC adjusted transmission delivery charges such that Evergy Kansas Central's annual retail revenue is expected to rise by about $16.8 million versus 2025, and in February 2026 Evergy Metro filed with the Missouri MPSC for a retail revenue increase of roughly $140 million, corresponding to a requested 10.5% ROE. A revenue-sharing mechanism also applies to Evergy Kansas Central, under which 50% of returns above a 9.7% ROE must be returned to customers. The company's moat sources include exclusive service territories, state regulation and rate mechanisms, transmission and distribution networks, grid interconnection nodes, and the fact that most retail customers have essentially no realistic option to switch suppliers; replicating this position would require decades of time, billions of dollars of capital, state regulatory approval, and a full transmission and distribution network. In the fourth quarter of 2025 Evergy received approval in Kansas and Missouri for a new large-load (LLPS) rate framework, under which new large customers pay premium rates while bearing their fair share of system costs, and the company has signed five large-customer ESAs. Within the broader U.S. utility investment universe, Evergy is benchmarked against peers including Ameren, Xcel Energy, and WEC Energy.
