História

EchoStar Corporation was founded in 1980 and is headquartered in Englewood, Colorado; it was formerly known as EchoStar Holding Corporation and went public on December 31, 2007. The company now employs roughly 12,100 people and operates through four reported segments: Pay-TV (DISH TV and Sling TV), Wireless (Boost Mobile and Gen Mobile), Broadband and Satellite Services (Hughes and HughesNet), and an Other segment covering its legacy 5G network and spectrum assets. EchoStar invested more than $30 billion in wireless spectrum, excluding about $10 billion in capitalized interest, to build out 5G, but in 2025 it agreed to sell most of its core wireless spectrum to AT&T and SpaceX, halted self-built 5G expansion, and shifted its Wireless business to a Hybrid MNO model that relies on AT&T's network for radio access while retaining the network core and billing/software. In connection with this strategic reset, the company recognized about $17.632 billion of impairments and other charges in 2025, and the FCC approved the AT&T and SpaceX transactions in May 2026. At the end of 2025 EchoStar served roughly 6.998 million Pay-TV subscribers, 7.511 million wireless subscribers, and 739 thousand broadband subscribers, and it markets its products under the Boost Mobile, DISH, Gen Mobile, Hughes, Hughesnet, and Sling brands.

Posição no setor

EchoStar operates across three consumer-facing arenas: U.S. pay television through DISH and Sling, prepaid and value wireless through Boost Mobile and Gen Mobile, and satellite broadband plus enterprise, government, and aeronautical connectivity through Hughes and HughesNet. Its market capitalization is about $35.58 billion, compared with roughly $11.47 billion for Viasat and $5.34 billion for Iridium. In wireless, EchoStar competes against Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile, all of which it describes as significantly larger; T-Mobile is valued at about $210.6 billion and AT&T at about $175.8 billion. In satellite broadband, EchoStar names ViaSat and SpaceX/Starlink as its principal competitors. The Pay-TV market faces structural decline from cord cutting and over-the-top competition, while the wireless market is mature with modest organic growth. EchoStar's differentiation has rested on scarce spectrum licenses, which the company is divesting under FCC pressure, alongside long-built installation, customer-service, distribution, and government and enterprise relationships. Founder and chairman Charlie Ergen holds beneficial ownership representing about 90.3% of the voting power and roughly 89.4% effective voting control.
