История

Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc. was founded in 1993 and is headquartered in Newport Beach, California. The company owns and operates Chipotle Mexican Grill restaurants, selling Mexican-inspired meals such as burritos, burrito bowls, quesadillas, tacos, and salads, and it manages the business as a single reportable segment. It went public on 2006-01-26. Revenue grew from $5.586 billion in 2019 to $11.926 billion in 2025, a roughly 13.5% CAGR over six years, while operating margin rose from about 8.0% to about 16.2% over the same period. The company executed a 50-for-1 stock split in 2024. By the end of 2025 it operated 4,042 company-operated restaurants plus 14 international licensed restaurants, with operations in the United States, Canada, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, and it employs about 135,000 people. Leadership transitioned in 2024: Scott Boatwright became CEO in November 2024 after serving as COO/Chief Restaurant Officer from 2017, and following Brian Niccol's departure the company separated the chairman and CEO roles, with Scott Maw serving as independent chairman. Digital channels have grown to 36.7% of food and beverage revenue in 2025, and the company continues to expand toward a long-term target of 7,000 restaurants in the United States and Canada.

Положение в отрасли

Chipotle operates in the U.S. restaurant industry, specifically the high-quality, digitally enabled, fast-casual segment. In the Technomic Top 500 2025 ranking it placed 7th among U.S. chain restaurants, and Restaurant Business noted its 2024 system sales grew 14.7%, surpassing Burger King and Subway. Its category competitors fall into two groups: larger, lower-priced Mexican/fast-food brands such as Taco Bell, QDOBA, and Del Taco, and smaller fast-casual peers closer to its model such as CAVA. By 2024 U.S. sales (QSR 2025 data), Taco Bell was about $16.2 billion, Chipotle about $11.111 billion, QDOBA about $1.2 billion, and CAVA about $954 million; on average unit volume, Chipotle was about $3.213 million, well above QDOBA's $1.695 million and slightly above CAVA's $2.9 million. Its competitive advantages derive from its "Food With Integrity" brand positioning and national brand recognition, its company-operated restaurant model that supports execution consistency, scale purchasing, digital ordering, the Chipotlane format that lifts new-store sales and returns, food-safety discipline, and a Rewards loyalty program; the company reports ROIC of about 21.5%. The company itself notes that switching costs for consumers are low and that competitors increasingly imitate higher-quality-ingredient marketing, while digital and delivery platforms can direct consumers to other brands.
