Moderna, Inc., a biotechnology company, provides messenger RNA medicines in the United States, Europe, and internationally. The company's respiratory vaccines include spikevax, mNEXSPIKE, mRESVIA, COVID, RSV, seasonal influenza, combination, and pandemic influenza vaccine; latent vaccines comprise cytomegalovirus, epstein-barr virus, and human immunodeficiency virus vaccines; enteric viruses include norovirus; public health vaccines consist of Zika, Nipah, and Mpox vaccines; and bacterial diseases vaccines, such as lyme vaccines. It also provides oncology therapeutics, such as intismeran autogene, cancer antigen therapy, t-cell engager, and cell therapy enhancer; and rare disease products, including propionic and methylmalonic acidemia, and cystic fibrosis. It has strategic alliances and collaborations with Merck & Co., Inc; Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated; Vertex Pharmaceuticals (Europe) Limited; immatics N.V.; Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency; Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority; Institute for Life Changing Medicines; The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; and OpenAI. The company was formerly known as Moderna Therapeutics, Inc. and changed its name to Moderna, Inc. in August 2018. Moderna, Inc. was founded in 2010 and is headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Its COVID-19 vaccine business drove revenue to a peak of $18.471 billion in 2021 and $19.263 billion in 2022, after which demand fell sharply to $6.848 billion in 2023, $3.236 billion in 2024, and $1.944 billion in 2025; the company posted a 2025 net loss of $2.822 billion and operating cash flow of -$1.873 billion, with Q1 2026 revenue of $389 million. The company has since shifted into a transition phase, advancing a broader pipeline including the RSV vaccine mRESVIA, mNEXSPIKE, the EU-approved flu-plus-COVID combination vaccine mCOMBRIAX, the seasonal influenza vaccine mRNA-1010 (assigned a U.S. PDUFA date of August 5, 2026), a trivalent norovirus vaccine in phase 3, and the individualized cancer vaccine intismeran developed with Merck (melanoma phase 3 enrollment complete). In 2026 Moderna reached a global settlement with Arbutus/Genevant, paying $950 million with up to $1.3 billion in possible additional payments. The company's competitive advantages stem from its mRNA platform, LNP delivery, process scale-up, rapid variant updating, and global regulatory-filing and manufacturing capabilities, reinforced by patents and regulatory barriers; it has limited network effects and weak switching costs. Moderna maintains strategic alliances and collaborations with Merck & Co., Vertex Pharmaceuticals, immatics N.V., the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, the Institute for Life Changing Medicines, The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and OpenAI. The mRNA platform is not exclusive to Moderna: peer BioNTech reported 2025 revenue of €2.870 billion, including €1.995 billion from COVID-19 vaccines, and held cash, cash equivalents, and securities totaling €17.236 billion at year-end 2025.
