History

Toyota traces its origin to the loom business: in 1933 Toyota Automatic Loom Works set up an automobile division, and in 1937 Toyota Motor Co., Ltd. was established, with industrial engineer and family operator Toyoda Kiichiro at its core. After the 1949 Dodge Line tightening and a 1950 management crisis, the company split into Toyota Motor Co., Ltd. and Toyota Motor Sales Co., Ltd., which were merged back into Toyota Motor Corporation in 1982. The Crown became the first Japanese passenger car exported to the US in 1957, Lexus launched in the US in 1989, and the Prius arrived in 1997; later milestones include the Toyota Research Institute (2016) and the start of Woven City construction (2021).

Industry position

Toyota is the world's largest automaker, earning profit through both vehicle manufacturing and financial services, and operating via Automotive, Financial Services, and All Other segments under the Toyota and Lexus brands. In FY2026 it posted revenue of 50.68 trillion yen, becoming the first Japanese company to exceed 50 trillion yen in revenue, though operating profit fell 21.5% to 3.766 trillion yen. Electrified vehicle sales reached 5.04 million units that year, of which HEVs were 4.62 million and BEVs 243,000, underscoring a hybrid-led electrification mix. North America, its largest profit pool, generated 21.08 trillion yen of revenue but only 73.6 billion yen of operating profit.
