Historia

Dow Inc. is a materials science company founded in 1897 and headquartered in Midland, Michigan. It became a separately listed company with an IPO on March 20, 2019. Dow operates through three reporting segments: Packaging & Specialty Plastics, Industrial Intermediates & Infrastructure, and Performance Materials & Coatings. In 2025 the company recorded sales of about $40 billion, with the three segments generating roughly $19.97 billion, $11.16 billion, and $8.13 billion in revenue (approximately 50% / 28% / 20% of the total); at its 2021 peak, sales reached about $55 billion with Operating EBIT of about $9.5 billion. Through a 2025 cyclical downturn the company took a series of defensive actions: it cut its quarterly dividend by 50% in mid-2025, raised about $3 billion in cash through the Diamond Infrastructure Solutions transactions in 2024-2025, deferred large projects, announced the closure of three upstream assets in Europe, and launched the Transform to Outperform program in 2026 involving about 4,500 roles. Effective July 1, 2026, Karen S. Carter is to become CEO and Jim Fitterling is to transition to executive chairman. As of the latest data the company employed about 34,600 people.

Posición en el sector

Dow operates in the basic materials / chemicals industry as a global producer of polyolefins, polyurethanes, intermediates, coatings, and silicone materials, serving end markets that include packaging, infrastructure, mobility, construction, automotive, electronics, and consumer applications across the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, India, Asia Pacific, and Latin America. Its Packaging & Specialty Plastics segment holds what the company describes as the industry's broadest polyolefin product portfolio, with differentiation drawn from proprietary catalysts and manufacturing processes, broad low-cost feedstock positions, global scale, and a fully integrated ethylene-to-polyethylene chain. The company competes in a global, multi-oligopoly market against peers including Chevron Phillips, ExxonMobil, INEOS, LyondellBasell, SABIC, Shell, Sinopec, BASF, Eastman, Arkema, Wacker, and Shin-Etsu. Dow holds a large patent portfolio, with approximately 3,900 active U.S. patents and 25,800 active foreign patents as of the end of 2025. Its customer base is diversified with no significant reliance on a single customer; sales are made largely through its own sales force, mostly under short-term contracts with payment terms generally of 30 to 60 days.
